e-pal’s looking for a couple of friends. |
E-pal explained
E-pal Chief Operating Officer [COO]
E-pal Project Realisation Manager [PRM]
|
Between 50 and 80 % of teenagers today play computer games. A majority of them have access to mobile phones and a lot of them like cartoons such as the Simpsons. The e-pal project is set to take the concept of a personal adviser to another level by developing an online virtual adviser service using the latest technologies in a way that will make them want to interact with it.
Connexions already has a website which
offers help in finding specific advice on careers, school, personal issues
and family life. It’s database driven and e-pal will connect with it to
deliver the content in an exciting and imaginative way.
And it’s the last bit that’s the most important.
We’re definitely not looking for code compilers with the interpersonal skills of a gherkin who’s idea of a good time is to debug forty pages of HTML on a Saturday night. You’ll get to meet them, you’ll probably employ them....but you’re not one of them.
Your buzz will come from helping young people to create and play with their e-pals. Which means that you’ll spend a lot of time listening to them and then working with the software developers to try and realise their ideas about what they want their e-pals to do.
We’ll make sure you get the credit for doing the work and we’ll be hands-off provided that you are hands-on. There’s also enough money to do something serious with e-pal as well as to pay you both an attractive salary.
In addition we’re prepared to be very flexible about how we employ you. We’re aware of the uncertainty associated with short term contracts so we’ll be happy to consider secondments and contracts with named individuals from VAT registered companies if that makes life easier for you.
In fact we’ll consider anything legal if it helps us to get the right people.
What more could you want?

Salary: up to £40K
Reporting Relationship:
The COO will be ultimately responsible to the Chief Executive Officer [CEO] of GM-Connexions via the Project Monitoring Board [PMB]. It is this body in turn which will confirm the budgetary allocations to support the Chief Operating Officer’s work.
Since the COO is a new post these arrangements will inevitably evolve in the light of experience and will be the subject of review after the COO has been in post for three months. The emphasis in the review will be on developing a flexible structure which facilitates the development of the project.
Term of the contract:
Eighteen months in the first instance — a secondment or personal contract via a properly constituted VAT registered company would be considered.
Role:
To create, develop and promote the e-pal brand on behalf of GM Connexions.
Key Tasks:
1. To act as the public face for the e-pal project at local, national and European level. (Keen interest in the project has already been expressed by the Office of the E-Envoy.)
2. To develop collaborative working relationships with key organisations nominated by GM-Connexions including selected groups of young people, software developers and designers.
3. To pay particular attention to developing the Connexions 'e-pal' brand from the start with a view to making links with a range of appropriate services from both the private and public sector that will enhance the project.
4. Overall responsibility for making sure that the project components are managed properly and delivered on time within the allocated budget.
5. To take a strategic approach to the
development of future funding sources in the context of creating
a viable exit strategy following the initial project phase of eighteen
months.
